A Message from the Manager

Fall is finally here. I hope you’re all staying warm and well fed.. This month we’ll have Stornetta fresh dried beans (available only once a year), Beyond Meat burgers (a hugely successful and authentic new meat alternative), several new Gluten-Free zero sugar hard mineral waters (available to buy by the case or as singles in our deli case), and many more new, fun & exciting goodies!

Perhaps more exciting than our new food and drink options, is our very first art reception this Friday, October 12th from 5-7pm! We’ll be featuring local artist Anthony Rees and San Diego based artist Meredith Fredericks. We’ll have a little live music and have wine by the glass available for order in our cafe. So come out, take in some fine art, and bring an instrument!

And lastly on the events calendar this month, DJ Jasmine will be registering voters on Friday, October 19th from 1-4pm. The deadline to register to vote is October 22nd.

So stop in, see what’s fresh, and make sure you’re registered to vote in the November election!

And remember, we vote every day with our dollars.

Southwestern Beyond Burger

Tastes great charbroiled!

 

Ingredients

Burgers
  • 4 Beyond Burger Patties
  • Caramelized Poblanos and Onions (recipe below)
  • Brioche burger buns, toasted
  • 2 Avocados, sliced
  • 1 cup Pico de Gallo
  • Chipotle Mayo
  • Butter Lettuce
For the Caramelized Poblanos and Onions:
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, finely sliced
  • 2 poblano peppers, finely sliced
  • ½ cup water
  • Kosher salt
 

PREPARATION

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium high heat. Add the onion and poblano and sauté for 10-15 minutes until it starts to caramelize. Reduce the heat to medium and add a few tablespoons of water starting at the 15 minute mark and continue to caramelize for a total of 45 minutes until deeply brown but not burnt. Season with salt and set aside.

Cook the Beyond Burgers according to the package directions.

Place your toasted buns on a plate and add the lettuce leaves to the bottom of the bun. Top the lettuce leaf with the Beyond Burger. Top the burger with sliced avocado and caramelized onions and poblanos. Add some pico de gallo on top. Slather the top half of the bun with the chipotle mayo and top the burger with the bun. Serve immediately.

Celebrating Co-ops!

We think co-ops are fabulous. Cooperation is, after all, a word that implies people working together towards the same end, mutually benefitting one another and the larger community. Both economically beneficial and socially responsible, these community-minded businesses make the world a better place—and that’s a beautiful thing. Here are three reasons to celebrate co-ops:

1. October is National Co-op Month

The cooperative model is unique. A co-op exists to serve its members, but the members are also the owners. With ownership comes an opportunity to participate in some co-op decision-making and to reap economic rewards for ownership, often in the form of patronage dividends.

Globally, there are nearly one billion people who are cooperative member-owners. And in the United States, there are more than 29,000 co-ops. Besides grocery/food, there are co-op brew-pubs, chocolate purveyors, coffee makers, dairy farms, credit unions, electric providers, hardware stores, arts & crafts, and housing to name a few.

2. The magnificent 7

Cooperative businesses proudly operate with seven principals that serve as guidelines to provide a democratic structure for co-ops around the world. While adoption of these principles is not required, most co-ops choose to adopt them for their business. The seven principles are:

  1. Voluntary and open membership
  2. Democratic member control
  3. Member economic participation
  4. Autonomy and independence
  5. Education, training and information
  6. Cooperation among cooperatives
  7. Concern for community

3. Everyone is welcome

At food co-ops, you don’t need to be a member to shop or participate* (participation is totally optional, though, and the most common form of participation is voting in co-op board elections). Although membership is encouraged and often provides additional rewards, your local co-op is democratically owned and operated, and all consumers are welcome. So check out the fresh, delicious food that food co-ops have to offer and, if you want, get involved, no matter your capacity for commitment right now. Anyone can go co-op.
